Literacy
In literacy we are using Fundations. Fundations is a multisensory, structured language program, which is based on the Wilson Reading System. Fundations provides research-based materials and strategies that are essential to a comprehensive reading, spelling, and handwriting program while making learning to read fun. This program focuses on skills in the following areas:
Below you will find the alphabet sheets from Fundations that are being sent home as we introduce the letters for extra practice and the paper we use with our writing. |
Math
In Math we are using a resource called GO Math! This program offers an engaging and interactive approach to covering the Iowa Common Core State Standards. We work together in large and small groups to solve higher order thinking questions with hands-on learning. Science This year for Science we will be using STEMscopes. STEMscopes is built on an instructional philosophy that centers on students learning science through hands-on exploration and inquiry. Each lesson includes a series of investigations and activities to bring science to life for our students so that they can “learn by doing” and fully engage in the scientific process. The program is strictly aligned to our [state’s/district’s] adopted standards and includes resources that incorporate literacy, math, music and videos, interactive tools, and a variety of assessment methods. The kindergarten areas of focus are - Push and Pull - Speed and Direction - Animal Needs - Energy from the Sun - Plant Needs - Organisms' Impact on Environments - Reducing Human Impact - Habitats - Uses of Natural Resources - Weather Conditions, Measurement of Weather, Weather Hazards Social Studies For Social Studies we use a resource from Scott Foresman. This resource has 6 Units and they work wonderfully with our 6 Language Units. In the Social Studies resource we talk about Families/Solving Problems, Communities, Jobs/Choices, Weather/Maps, Symbols/Celebrations Everyday Routines and more. Within these units are skills that support our literacy, such as using illustrations, sequencing, recalling and retelling stories. |
